WORK LESS WEDNESDAY
WLW #123
ā¤ļøāš©¹ 1. My Addiction & Recovery Story –Ā Watch The Videoā
Today is an important day for me.
13 years ago, on this very day, I was sitting in rehab for an addiction that nearly claimed my life.
That means that I havenāt used drugs/alcohol since June 26, 2011.
I’ve never spoken publicly about this.
And today I want to share more.
Youāve probably noticed Iāve been pretty quiet on social media for the past 6 months.
Thereās a reason for that.
Iām now at the point point where I donāt think I can move forward in entrepreneurship and business if Iām not open about who I am, how I got here, and what Iām doing now.
And it begins today.
This video/podcast will be ushering in a new era of me sharing more openly about whatās going on in my life and business.
In it I share:
- My addiction story, and how I ended up in rehab at 21.
- How I got into recovery and what 13 years of no drugs/alcohol has looked like for me.
- Why Iām feeling the need to align my work and life, and tap into a new fuel for the next phase of my business.
It would mean a lot to me if you took 30 minutes to watch it.
š 2. Book Iām Reading This Week –Ā Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara
A few months ago in WLW I shared a clip of the author talking about his 95/5 Rule For Managing Expenses.
If you liked that, turns out heās got a whole book.
From Amazon:
Will Guidara was twenty-six when he took the helm of Eleven Madison Park, a struggling two-star brasserie that had never quite lived up to its majestic room.
Eleven years later, EMP was named the best restaurant in the world.
How did Guidara pull off this unprecedented transformation?
Radical reinvention, a true partnership between the kitchen and the dining roomāand memorable, over-the-top, bespoke hospitality.
There is SO much to learn about life and business from this book.
EVERY business can (and probably should) be a hospitality business.
Its about intention and purpose.
One of my favorite quotes so far:
āService is black and white; hospitality is color.ā
āBlack and whiteā means youāre doing your job with competence and efficiency; ācolorā means you make people feel great about the job youāre doing for them.
Getting the right plate to the right person at the right table is service.
But genuinely engaging with the person youāre serving, so you can make an authentic connectionāthatās hospitality.
š 3. How Does Trey Anastasio Prepare For A Phish Show? –Ā YouTube Interview Clipā
If you didnāt know, Iām a pretty big Phish fan.
- 4 nights at the Sphere in April.
- 13 shows in the last 2 years. (this are the ones ā¬ļø)
Today I want to share one of my favorite clips from an interview with Phish guitarist Trey Anasasio.
Phish has never repeated a setlist in 40 years of being a band.
This video shares Treyās approach to preparing for a Phish show.
It starts with a list of 100 songs printed out at the beginning of the day, and ends with him ripping up the list completely right before he goes on stage.
For him it comes down to a combination of:
Preparation, Ritual, and Abandonment.
If your work involves a state of flow at all, I definitely recommend watching it.
š¬ 4. Crazy Concept I Learned About This Week –Ā Twin Films
Have you ever noticed that REALLY similar movies tend to come out around the same time?
For example:
- White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
- A Bugās Life and Antz (1998)
- The Illusionist and The Prestige (2006)
- Armageddon and Deep Impact (1998)
- Paul Blart Mall Cop and Observe and Report (2009)
And the list goes onā¦
Well it turns out itās not just a coincidence.
From Wikipedia:
āTwin films are films with the same or similar plots produced and released at the same time by two different film studios.
The phenomenon can result from two or more production companies investing in similar scripts at the same time, resulting in a race to distribute the films to audiences.
Some attribute twin films to industrial espionage, the movement of staff between studios, or that the same screenplays are sent to several film studios before being accepted.ā
Crazy.
š¾ 5. Gaming Console I Bought Last Week –Ā SteamDeck
After having an eye on this thing for the last 6 months, I finally pulled the trigger.
Thereās nothing better than sitting on a plane playing Elden Ring in your lap.
10/10 definitely recommend.
