⛰️ 1. Back At Home After Hurricane Helene (Finally)

Since the Hurricane Helene hit our city on September 26th, we’ve been without power, water, and internet.

But I’m excited to share that after 3 weeks of living in hotels, we are back home!

We still don’t have potable water (which means we can’t drink it or cook with it), but everything else is back – power, internet, and non-potable water.

We lost our storage unit in the flood plus had a pretty serious mudslide on the side of our house (see above), but other than that, the home is okay.

Finally, I just want to thank everyone who reached out with kind words and offers for help over the past few weeks. It means a ton to me!

🚩 FYI – The Western North Carolina community STILL needs support. Two places you can donate to give back. 🚩

❤️ Beloved Asheville – The gold standard right now. Community organization that is absolutely killing it in deploying water, food, healthcare, and housing for those affected by the hurricane.

🐦‍🔥 Cardinals At The Window – Benefit compilation album. All proceeds go to Western NC. Includes 136 tracks from A TON of awesome artists including Phish, The War On Drugs, Angel Olsen, Fleet Foxes, REM, and much more!

📚 2. The Art of Studying Book Covers

books at barnes and nobles

Every time my wife and I go to a book store, I make a beeline for the new release books section.

What am I after?

Book cover designs.

There’s so much to learn from them.

  • I love looking at the trends as they evolve over time. I’ve noticed often one cover design becomes a hit and then you’ll see TONS of copycat designs seeking to capitalize on it, until a new trend rolls in. Read more here.
  • I love the idea of one visual design having to represent the essence of a 100% non-visual written work.
  • I love seeing 40-50 books on one shelf and noticing the one cover that jumps out to me over all the others.
  • I love comparing which covers I like to which I don’t (see 3 of the ones I liked circled above). It’s a great exercise to hone your taste and design aesthetic.
  • I love seeing book covers that are terrible and asking myself “WHO WOULD BUY THIS?” Because people do.

Next time you’re at the book store, do yourself a favor:

Take in the covers. There’s a lot to learn.

Kelli Anderson’s Alphabet in Motion, is a pop-up book that explains how typography works.

This is not a normal pop-up book.

My words can’t do it justice.

Watch the Kickstarter video.

Unreal.
